THE DAY THE SUN WAS DWARFED

When someone asks you, "What's the largest object in the Solar System?" the correct answer is usually the sun but in 2007 and 2008 scientists were astounded when comet 17P/Holmes suddenly exploded, throwing out a dust atmosphere to a distance of 1.4 million kilometers and essentially becoming the largest object in the system.

While the sun will soon regain its status as the biggest boy on the block, at the time of this writing, 17P/Holmes is still large and still getting bigger.
