Images of these nasty-looking creatures first hit the net almost ten years ago and they have become something of an urban legend.  While camel spiders most certainly exist and are found in parts of Iraq, they are usually not harmful to people and don't gnaw on them while they are asleep.  The top speed of these buggers, reported to be 30 miles per hour, is also somewhat of an exaggeration although their real speed of 10 miles per hour is still pretty impressive for an animal that can reach 8 inches long.
