THE OLD MAN OF CRATER LAKE
At first glance, there's nothing special about this log dubbed "The Old Man" that floats in Crater Lake in Oregon. This log, possibly a hemlock that bobs silently in the crystal clear waters, is about thirty feet long, two feet in diameter, and bleached white by the elements.
How old is this "old man?" Its first recorded appearance was in 1896. It's been floating in the lake for well over a century and is often a stop on tours. The water is so clear that visitors can actually see down the entire tree's length and the wood is so large and buoyant that a person can stand on it without sinking.
