I've never read the Spawn comic book. But don't worry, I never read the Tank Girl comic book before I saw the Tank Girl movie and it's one of my favorite films of all time. Now that you all know I will give Spawn a fair and impartial review, let's continue. Spawn sucked. I mean, it sucked. Ten minutes into the movie, I was totally lost. I'm sure if you are familiar with the comic book, this film would make at least a little sense... at least I hope it does. Spawn starts out at the beginning of the movie as a secret agent who goes out to stop a bioweapons plant from letting loose a really bad virus on the unsuspecting population of a third world nation. The agent is killed by his own boss and is sent to hell where he meets Satan. ohhhhhhh He makes a deal with Satan to lead the armies of hell and is sent back to Earth as Spawn. Spawn - who looks like Freddy Kruger by now - meets the Clown. This where the movie gets worse. Clown, played by the pesky John Leguizamo, is a demon who is in cahoots with Spawn's former boss who has developed the ultimate killer virus and is going to release it on the entire world and kill everyone who doesn't kiss his butt. Anyways, Clown tells Spawn's boss to connect a devise to his heart that will release the virus if it stops beating. (Which is, undoubtedly, the most moronic thing I've ever seen a movie villain do) Add this to the fact Clown wants Spawn's boss dead anyway, but seems too stupid to do it himself... sigh. First off... yes, there are some pretty impressive effects in this film, however, they are eclipsed by the not-so-impressive ones. (There's a fight at the end that is supposed to take place in hell, but looks more like Who Framed Roger Rabbit's Toontown.) And then there's John Leguizamo... the Clown... Spawn's adversary... an obnoxious, flatulent, un-funny, annoying, putz! Who was the casting genius that cast John Leguizamo in this part anyway!? Watching this movie made me feel dirty. I feel I will need a shower.
